The short answer

What the review checks in a food & beverage file

Cheese made with animal rennet, gelatin-clarified juice, fish sauce in a seasoning blend — food files fail vegetarian claims in the details. The V-Cert Vegetarian Standard defines lacto, ovo and lacto-ovo variants, checks slaughter by-products ingredient by ingredient, and states the verified variant on the certificate — so your label says exactly what was checked.

Differentiators

Why V-Cert for food & beverage

Slaughter by-products excluded

Gelatin, animal rennet, isinglass and meat-derived flavorings are checked even where labels don’t show them.

Variant on the certificate

Lacto, ovo or lacto-ovo — the verified variant is printed on the certificate face, and it comes back with every check of the number.

Readable across markets

An internationally readable third-party mark — including alongside India’s mandatory FSSAI marking, which it does not replace.

FAQ

Questions specific to this file

Is cheese made with rennet vegetarian?

Only with microbial or fermentation-produced rennet — animal rennet is a slaughter by-product. The supplier’s rennet specification settles it, and it’s one of the most common findings in vegetarian reviews of dairy files. Widely available microbial alternatives certify without any issue.

Which variant should our label claim?

The one your formulation supports — lacto, ovo or lacto-ovo — and the certificate states it. If a product line spans variants, each certificate says exactly what was verified. Your reviewer confirms the right variant from the formulation before the certificate is drafted.

Does this replace FSSAI veg marking in India?

No — FSSAI veg/non-veg marking is a legal requirement for products sold in India. The V-Cert mark adds independent, internationally readable verification on top of it. Vegetarian certification in India explains how the two work together in practice.

How long does vegetarian certification take?

Dairy-heavy files mostly turn on rennet and additive declarations — gather those early. With declarations in hand, reviews stay comfortably inside the typical window stated on the vegetarian pillar; the stage-by-stage detail is on how it works.
