Certifying supplements: vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO in one review

How vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO certification apply to supplements — capsules, carriers, vitamin D3, omega-3s — and why brands bundle the three marks.

Supplements are the product category where clean-label claims are hardest to see and easiest to get wrong: the risk sits in capsule shells, carriers and source materials, not the active ingredient. Vegan, gluten-free (≤20 ppm) and non-GMO certification each check a different layer of that supply chain, and because the evidence overlaps, certifying them together is one review instead of three.

Why supplements are a special case

A supplement label names an active — vitamin D, magnesium, an omega-3 — and buries everything that decides its clean-label status in the fine print or off the label entirely. The capsule is an ingredient. The carrier the vitamin is sprayed onto is an ingredient. The anti-caking agent, the coating on the tablet, the gelatin in the softgel, the source organism the active was fermented from — all of it counts, and none of it is what the customer thinks they are buying. US regulation adds a second layer of confusion: under DSHEA (1994), supplements reach the market without FDA pre-approval, and manufacturing is governed by the cGMP rule at 21 CFR Part 111 — a quality framework that says nothing about vegan, gluten-free or GMO status. The usual suspects, ingredient by ingredient

  • Gelatin softgels and gummies — the single most common vegan blocker. Plant alternatives (HPMC capsules, pectin gummies) are mature; switching is a reformulation decision, not a research project.
  • Vitamin D3 — lanolin-derived by default. Lichen-derived D3 is certifiable vegan but must be evidenced by the supplier's spec, not the marketing page.
  • Omega-3s — fish and krill oils are out for vegan; algal oil versions are in, and their spec sheets state the source organism.
  • Magnesium stearate — can be tallow-derived or vegetable-derived; only the supplier declaration settles it.
  • Maltodextrin — usually corn (a GM-risk crop for the non-GMO review) but sometimes wheat (a gluten question in the EU; in the US it is typically processed below detection, which is why the review reads the spec rather than assuming).
  • Fermentation-derived actives — B12, many amino acids and enzymes are grown on substrates that may be GM-derived or contain gluten carriers; the fermentation medium is part of all three reviews.
  • Probiotics — the growth medium may involve dairy; "dairy-free" and vegan both hang on the supplier's process documentation.

Gluten-free supplements: what the number means

"Gluten-free" on a US supplement follows the same FDA rule as food — 21 CFR 101.91, which requires less than 20 ppm gluten. Certification does not change the number; it verifies your evidence for it: ingredient specs showing no gluten-containing sources, cross-contact controls on shared lines, and test reports where the risk profile warrants them. Every V-Cert gluten-free certificate states the exact threshold standard applied (≤20 ppm under the FDA rule), so the claim is quantified on the certificate itself — and the certificate number a buyer checks returns that same figure. Supplements earn extra scrutiny at the carrier layer — starches, maltodextrins and fermentation media are where undeclared gluten hides. Non-GMO supplements: source crops and substrates

For the non-GMO review, the question is upstream: what organism did each input come from, and was it genetically modified? Corn and soy derivatives — maltodextrin, lecithin, vitamin E, citric acid substrates — dominate supplement excipients and are the highest-GM-acreage crops in the US, so this review leans on identity-preserved sourcing declarations. The claim certified is non-GMO — never "GMO-free", an absolute no review can honestly support. Why supplement brands bundle the marks

The three reviews read the same documents. A capsule's spec sheet answers the vegan question (HPMC, not gelatin), the gluten question (no wheat-derived glaze) and the GMO question (fermentation substrate) in one pass — so running the marks separately means paying three bodies to read the same file. Certification verifies label claims — vegan, gluten-free at ≤20 ppm, non-GMO. It is not a safety review, not an efficacy claim, and not FDA approval, which supplements do not receive. A certified supplement is a supplement whose clean-label claims someone independent has checked. Nothing more is claimed, because nothing more is true.

Frequently asked questions

Can supplements in gelatin capsules be certified vegan?

Not while the shell is gelatin, which is animal-derived. Plant-based alternatives — HPMC (hypromellose) and pullulan capsules, pectin-based gummies — are mature and widely available, and products reformulated onto them certify normally. The shell counts as an ingredient in every vegan review.

Is vitamin D3 vegan?

Usually not by default — most D3 is derived from lanolin, which comes from sheep's wool. Lichen-derived vitamin D3 is vegan and certifiable, but the supplier's specification must state the lichen source explicitly. Vitamin D2 is produced from yeast or fungi and is generally vegan.

What does gluten-free mean on a supplement?

In the US it follows FDA rule 21 CFR 101.91: the product must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. Certification verifies the evidence behind that number — ingredient sources, cross-contact controls, and testing where warranted — and a V-Cert gluten-free certificate states the exact threshold standard it was reviewed against.

Does the FDA approve or certify supplements?

No. Under DSHEA, dietary supplements do not receive FDA pre-market approval; manufacturers must follow cGMP requirements (21 CFR Part 111) and are responsible for their own label claims. That absence of official approval is why independent third-party certification carries weight with supplement buyers.

Do I need to certify every product in my range?

No — certification scope is per product. Many brands certify their flagship range first and extend at renewal. Each certificate lists exactly which products it covers, and anyone who checks that certificate by its number sees the same scope, so a partial range is presented honestly rather than implying the whole catalog is certified.
