Cost guide · 2026

How much does cruelty-free certification cost in 2026?

Cruelty-free certification is priced unlike most clean-label marks: applying is usually free, and the fee attaches to the logo license. Leaping Bunny publishes a one-time license of $500–$4,500 banded by gross annual sales; PETA lists a one-time $350 (published rates, 2026). V-Cert Cruelty-Free is one annual fee per scope — a desk review of supplier testing declarations against a dated cut-off policy. Your exact V-Cert quote is scoped to the products you list — one fixed annual figure, and no obligation.

Typical desk review: 5–10 business days from complete documentation.

Published cruelty-free certification fees, compared

Cruelty-free pricing is unusually public: both established programs publish their license fees. The table lists what each program itself makes public:

Figures are each program's own published rates, checked 9 July 2026. The programs verify at different depths — Leaping Bunny backs its license with supplier monitoring and independent audits, PETA certifies on a signed statement of assurance, and V-Cert runs a remote desk review against its own written standard — so no equivalence between them is implied. If your retailer requires Leaping Bunny specifically, V-Cert is not a substitute.

What drives cost

The factors that actually move the number

Cruelty-free fees hinge less on a headline rate and more on where the money attaches and what the review must cover. Five factors set your real cost:
  1. Where the fee attaches — the license or the reviewThe established cruelty-free programs charge for the logo license — one-time, with application itself free (published rates, 2026). V-Cert prices the other way around: one annual fee per scope covers the review, the certificate and the mark artwork, with no separate license fee on top.
  2. Company-size bandingLeaping Bunny's license is banded by gross annual sales at $500–$4,500 (published rates, 2026), so the same product line costs more as the company behind it grows. V-Cert quotes on scope — marks, product category and SKU band — never on revenue or company size.
  3. How many supplier declarations your formula needsThe evidence behind a cruelty-free claim is per-grade supplier declarations — each covering the exact ingredient grades you buy — reviewed against a fixed, dated cut-off policy. A formulation with thirty ingredient suppliers is more review effort than one with eight, and that moves quotes under any documentation-based program.
  4. The markets in your certified scopeSales routes into markets whose regulators require animal testing conflict with the claim, so the certified scope must exclude them and the certificate names the markets it covers. Drawing that scope across several markets adds per-route analysis to the review — one honest reason two quotes for the same formula can differ.
  5. Whether you pair it with veganCruelty-free and vegan answer different buyer questions — testing policy and ingredient origin — from overlapping paperwork. Certifying each claim with a separate organization multiplies applications and invoices; in a V-Cert review you can add vegan to the same file, and the added mark is priced below the first because the evidence is shared.

Built for — and not built for

V-Cert Cruelty-Free is built for cosmetics and personal-care brands — indie and DTC lines included — whose buyers want an independent testing-policy claim they can check by certificate number, with the cut-off policy and the covered markets reviewed in writing.

It is not built for suppliers whose retailer requires Leaping Bunny by name: that requirement names the scheme, and a different mark does not satisfy it. We ask about your buyers during the desk review — if yours name a specific program, we say so plainly before anything is payable.

What the V-Cert annual fee includes

One annual fee per scope covers the desk review, the certificate and the QR code printed on it, cruelty-free mark artwork in four formats (print, digital, mono and reverse), mid-year product additions within your certified scope, an NDA on request, and a named reviewer from the V-Cert Certification Team who handles your file end-to-end. There is no application fee, no separate logo-license fee and no per-SKU charge.

FAQ

Cruelty-Free certification cost questions

How much does cruelty-free certification cost with V-Cert?

V-Cert publishes no price list — your quote is one annual fee per scope, built from the marks you choose, your product category and your SKU band, with no application fee and unlimited SKUs within scope. Your exact figure is scoped to the products you list.

What does Leaping Bunny certification cost?

Leaping Bunny charges nothing to apply. The cost is a one-time logo license of $500–$4,500, banded by the company's gross annual sales (published rates, 2026) — and behind the license sits an audited program: supplier monitoring, a fixed testing cut-off date and independent audits.

What does PETA's cruelty-free logo cost?

PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies program is free to register, with a one-time $350 logo license granted on a questionnaire and a signed statement of assurance (published rates, 2026). The two programs are built differently — PETA prices one flat license on a signed statement, Leaping Bunny bands its license by company size and backs it with supplier monitoring — so their fees are not measuring the same thing.

Is there an application fee?

No. As with the established cruelty-free programs, applying costs nothing — and there is no separate logo-license fee either: mark artwork comes with the one annual fee. Nothing is payable until you approve the quote in writing.

If my retailer requires Leaping Bunny, does a V-Cert certificate satisfy it?

No. A requirement that names Leaping Bunny is satisfied only by that program — V-Cert certifies against its own written standard and claims no equivalence to anyone else's. Send us the requirement and we'll tell you plainly which of your claims a V-Cert review can cover and which it cannot.

Does a cruelty-free certificate cover vegan too?

No — the two claims answer different questions. Cruelty-free concerns animal testing after a dated cut-off; vegan concerns animal-derived ingredients; a product can qualify for one without the other. If your buyers ask for both, you can pair the marks in one V-Cert review, where the added mark is priced below the first because the document sets overlap.

What makes a cruelty-free quote higher or lower?

Four inputs move a V-Cert quote: marks selected, product category, SKU band and optional export markets. Review effort additionally tracks your supplier chain — per-grade declarations for every ingredient supplier — and the number of markets in your certified scope. There is no revenue or company-size component.

What does renewal cost?

Renewal is the same annual fee stated in your quote, re-confirmed each year for the same scope — no new application fee. If your scope grows (new marks, a larger SKU band, a new category), we re-quote the difference before anything is payable.
